Copa: Where are you and your husband from?
Jackie: We are both Washingtonians. I'm from Southeast and he is from as he likes to say upper Northwest. Copa: What schools have you both attended?
Jackie: I went to Prince Georges College and finished at Bowie State with a Nursing Degree and a minor in Art History. Copa: When was the decision made on opening the Art gallery?
Jackie: My husband has always been an entrepreneur, he was the one that wanted a family business and the one who knew everything about business ownership, so after surveying the gallery scene for African American art in the DMV area we decided to open a gallery to showcase African American artist. |
Copa: What type of art gathers your interests the most?
Jackie: My husband and I collect art, but our tastes in art are very different. He is interested and collects historical pieces and I enjoy nudes. (laughing) I've embraced my interest, that’s what touches me and I believe every good collection should have a nude. Copa: How did art become your passion?
Jackie: My journey with art started when I was a child with my grandmother who would take me to museums mostly in Philadelphia where she lived. When I got older starting in college I searched for art that looked like me and represented my experiences and when I found African American art, my love for art grew! Copa: Exactly how is the gallery set up?
Jackie: The gallery represents 40 African American artist and we help the community start collections and build on them. Selling everything from open edition lithographs to originals. |
Copa: Does the gallery host special shows or exhibits?
Jackie: Yes we have 4 major exhibits a year with the artist in attendance.

Copa: How did the Overdue Recognition Art Gallery get it's name?
Jackie: We chose the name because for too long African American artists have struggled for recognition against their peers. Our Gallery is a forum for artist to demonstrate their brilliance, integrity and skills to achieve the recognition that is long overdue.
