Copa: Were did you grow up?
Carlton: I grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. Copa: What schools have you attended?
Carlton: I attended the neighborhood elementary school (Lexington Terrance Elementary). I attended Harlem Park Junior High School (for two years) and attended Francis Scott Key Junior High School (for one year due to the zoning and busing law). I graduated from Southern High School (as a football superstar for the school). I would go on to play college football for one year at Western Maryland College (now named McDaniel College). |
Copa: How would you describe your neighborhood when you were growing up?
Carlton: I grew up in Lexington Terrace. It just happened to have been one of the toughest neighborhoods in Baltimore City. As tough as it was, it was a community that was very close. It was perfect example of "Village" and a "Village raising it's Children."

Copa: How many siblings do you have?
Carlton: I had 8 siblings; 3 sisters and 5 brothers (2 brothers have passed away). Currently there's 7 of us living.

Copa: What does "family' really mean to you?
Carlton: My Pops have always ingrained in us that family was all we have. I would consistently remind us of that up until his passing several years ago. When I think of my family I think of so many precious memories and love/caring that we share with each other. Because of the way we were raised, family was everything and family included our extended family (the community).

Copa: How often does everyone get together and for what reasons?
Carlton: The family make it a point to get together during Christmas and Thanksgiving; as well as annual birthday parties and other community reunions. We continue to encourage the nieces and nephews to continue the traditions of holiday gatherings. It has slowly become a slight challenge.

Copa: In your opinion, how important is communication between all of your siblings in keeping up with each other (thru thick-n-thin)?
Carlton: It's very important for us to chat and stay in contact with each other. We all reside in Maryland, Virginia and Pennsivan. Eventhough we have distance between us, we remain very close.

Copa: What was the most important lesson your parents left everyone?
Carlton: I believe the most important lesson our parents left with us was the importance of Family; Being grateful; and Loving! We rarely ever finish a conversation or leave each other -- without letting the other know they are loved. Even to this day people from the neighbor we grew up with; remains us of how our family "The Harts" represented the ideal family.

Copa: What does the future hold for your family?
Carlton: We will continue to stay in contact; get together as much as we can to laugh and dance; and past down history/traditions (instilled in us by my Dad and Mom) -- down to our love ones.
