Copa: Where are you from?

Cerise:
I am a proud Washingtonian representing the fourth generation of my family to call the illustrious and captivating city of Washington, DC, my home.
Copa: What schools have you attended?

Cerise: I attended Woodrow Wilson High School in Washington, DC and the University of the District of Columbia.
Copa: Who were the 2 most influential people in your life?

Cerise:
When I think about the people who have had a significant impact on my life, my mother, Elaine Hunter Turner, and my sister, Bernice Sanders Smoot, immediately come to mind. They have provided me with wisdom, guidance, and unwavering support throughout my journey. Their belief in me has been instrumental in shaping who I am today.
Copa: Have you always been interested in the world of pageantry? If so, at what time?

Cerise: As a young person in the era before cable and the Internet, I used to watch pageants on network TV with fascination. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that one day I would find myself participating in those very pageants that captivated my attention from the comfort of my living room. Life has a way of surprising us with unexpected twists and turns.

Copa: Who or what encouraged you to enter the Ms. Senior District of Columbia Pageant?

Cerise:
During the initial two years of the Covid era, as the world faced unprecedented challenges, I found myself longing for connection and purpose. Encouraged by my twin daughters, who recognized my restlessness, I decided to join the Model Cities Senior Wellness Center.

Within a week of becoming a member, a fortuitous moment occurred. Stacie Mack, the Center's Director, approached me with an opportunity that would change my life forever: participating in the prestigious Ms. Senior DC Pageant. In that transformative instant, I knew deep within that this was the chance I had been waiting for—a chance to embrace a new purpose and rejuvenate my spirit. Without hesitation, I eagerly accepted the invitation, driven by a profound desire to explore my potential and radiate the inner light that had long been dormant within me.

Copa: What was your platform for the 2023 Pageant?

Cerise:
My platform, "Technology for Seniors: Bridging the Digital Divide," is driven by a passion to empower and uplift the senior community. In collaboration with the technology community, we strive to create computer training programs specifically tailored for seniors in Washington, DC. Our goal is to equip them with the essential digital skills and knowledge they need to confidently navigate the ever-evolving technological landscape.

However, our dedication doesn't stop at teaching technical skills. We recognize the potential risks and challenges that seniors may face in the digital world, particularly in relation to scams, fraud, financial exploitation, and the heartbreaking phenomenon of romance scams. With this in mind, we work closely with esteemed experts in elder abuse prevention to develop impactful presentations and educational initiatives. These efforts are aimed at raising awareness among seniors about the deceptive tactics employed by scammers and providing them with the necessary tools to protect themselves from financial exploitation and emotional harm.

Through our united vision and collective efforts, we strive to bridge the digital divide that may exist among seniors, ensuring they are not left behind in an increasingly digital society. By providing them with the tools, knowledge, and protection they need, we empower them to fully participate and thrive in the digital age. Our ultimate goal is to create a brighter future where every senior can embrace the boundless opportunities and possibilities that technology offers, while feeling confident, safe, and connected.
Copa: As the year moves forward, what areas do you wish to focus on as you carry the title?

Cerise:
With a determination, I aim to make a profound impact by honing in on key endeavors that will foster deeper connections, heightened engagement, and unwavering empowerment for the senior community of Washington, DC.

Foremost among these aspirations is the delivery of comprehensive training, education, and invaluable information that seniors yearn for in their quest to become active participants within their communities. By providing them with the tools and resources necessary to navigate the intricacies of the digital age, I aim to empower them to forge meaningful connections, seize enriching opportunities, and immerse themselves in the vibrant tapestry of their surroundings.

Moreover, I hold steadfast in my commitment to safeguarding the well-being of seniors, arming them with knowledge and empowering them to protect themselves. Through tailored initiatives, I aspire to enlighten seniors about prevalent threats such as scams, frauds, and financial exploitation, equipping them with the wisdom and fortitude to navigate these treacherous waters with resilience and confidence.

In essence, my overarching goal is to create a harmonious symphony of connectivity, engagement, and protection, resonating within the hearts and minds of seniors throughout Washington, DC. By imparting essential knowledge, fostering vibrant connections, and nurturing a sense of empowerment, I strive to be the catalyst that bridges the divide, amplifying the voices and enriching the lives of seniors in our community.
Copa: Have you always considered yourself as a ‘woman of style?’ If so, how would you describe your personal style?

Cerise:
I have a unique sense of style that reflects the different sides of my personality. I don't believe that being fashionable requires a lot of time and money. Instead, I invest in things that hold value over time, understanding that true style goes beyond trends.

My personal style is a mix of influences. I love vintage pieces for their timeless charm and the stories they carry. I also enjoy the allure of chic and Bohemian chic aesthetics, blending free-spirited elements with effortless elegance.

I don't limit myself to one particular style. I appreciate the sophistication of classic fashion, embodying the elegance of bygone eras. But I also appreciate the power and confidence that comes with business attire, commanding respect and professionalism.

Sometimes, I lean towards conservative fashion, appreciating its understated elegance. Other times, I venture into retro styles, breathing new life into past trends. I even embrace athletic wear for its comfort and functionality, without sacrificing style. And yes, there are moments when I embrace sensuality, choosing clothing that celebrates my femininity.
My style is like a tapestry, representing the different aspects of who I am. I enjoy the freedom to explore diverse aesthetics, allowing my fashion choices to evolve with each phase of my life. Fashion, for me, is not about strict rules but a canvas to express myself in vibrant colors.
