This column is being written about the 2023 Maryland, Virginia and District of Columbia International Pageant from the prospective of a judge. This year’s judges were either former titleholders or pageant mom’s (these are mom’s that have had daughters with a title). A couple of us have been both a pageant mom and a title holder.

* Jennifer Wakefield – Mrs. Maryland International 2019
The judges interviewed each contestant for five minutes. Some questions that I asked were tell me about your platform and how you will promote it when you win your title? Why did you choose the International system? Earlier in the day I asked social media to suggest questions to ask in interview. The one that I asked many contestants was “Today is National Kindness Day. What’s one act of kindness that you are most proud of putting in motion?” Thank you to Rachelle Bodvin for that question. There were three sets of 5 contestants, so we interviewed for an hour and a half. These ladies are well spoken, know how to grab your attention and educated you on their platform in the minutes that they had with the us.
The judges then had a three and a half hour break for lunch and to visit before the show started. We ate salad and chocolate cheesecake. We used this time to have fun talking shop with other beauty queens!
From the DMV pageants website: The Pre-Teen, Teen Miss and Mrs. International system has established itself as an organization with integrity, high ethical standards and consistent application of it’s rules and regulations. It is our goal to provide ladies everywhere the opportunity to compete in a pageant system that maintains the highest of moral values.
We believe that we owe consistent application of our rules and regulations to all of our past, present and future contestants and directors. We are firmly committed to applying these standards fairly, uniformly and consistently.
Our History. Beginning 30 years ago, the International pageant was created to be the premier pageant for women around the world to share their beliefs and expand humanitarian platforms on a global scale.
The Pre-Teen, Teen, Miss and Mrs. International Organization empowers women and celebrates their accomplishments. Through our system, women find the opportunity to become positive role models by impacting real change in their communities with the potential to reach a global audience.
Interview: This is one on one for 5 minutes with each judge where we were to keep in mind accomplishments, family commitment, communication skills, community involvement and overall appearance. Included in the interview score is the on-stage platform presentation and question.
Aerobic wear is supplied by the pageant. Judged on being physically fit, energetic and healthy.
Fun Fashion is for each contestant to showcase their fashion sense with flair.
Evening gown. The husbands will escort their wives in the evening gown competition. All other categories model on their own. This is scored on self-confidence, poise and grace.
The Mrs. Miss, Teen and Pre-Teen have interview and evening gown. The Mrs. Miss and Teen have fitness. The Miss, Teen and Pre-teen have the fun fashion competition.
Now it was time for the distinguished judges to watch these ladies compete in their on-stage phases of competition. All of the contestants walked the stage and were introduced.
Then it was time to watch the ladies and all of the hard work they have put into being physically fit. They wore either the blue or the black International Fitness outfit where you can choose from a tank top and bike shorts or a sports bra and bike shorts.
Next was the on stage question where each delegate told us their platform statement. They were all amazing causes. I like to say each international title holder is bringing world peace one platform at a time.
Next was the evening gown competition. Elegance and Beauty in this competition.
And that concluded the competition phase of the 2023 International pageant.
We heard the outgoing queens fare well speeches. Each one told us what they did during their year of service. Each lady was beautiful and heart-warming.
Many thanks and accolades to the lady that makes all of this possible, Janelle Wright. Always a top notch production at a great venue and the show runs on time! She is the one who is your greatest cheerleader, happy attitude and all of her contestants know that she is the best director anywhere!!
"Josie Faces" and team have been with the pageant since 2018. Helping us all look our most gorgeous selves! Thank you, Josie Valdez and team!!
