Copa: At what time did you become interested in Photography?
Barry: I started taking photos in the mid 1970’s. I was about 10 when I asked to take my mother’s 110 Kodak camera on a field trip with my school in Baltimore. The one thing I quickly learned was taking good photos is a lot harder then it seems.

Copa: What was your first subject matter?
Barry: Family photos

Copa: When did you develop your own style of lighting?
Barry: My goal is to get the one WOW! Shot, That 1 shot that stand out and makes the cover of the magazine, or you say WoW! When you enter a room and the photo is on the wall. I am a mimic. I study images that I find appealing and try to emulate them. I incorporate my own flair into the process especially with shadows and light.

Copa: What is your special philosophy to studio lighting and outside lighting?
Barry: I am a technical shooter with intent to make huge adjustments or minor adjustment to the shot in post production. So getting as much drama in the camera is always my goal. Be patient and enjoying the process.

Copa: How do you get the most out of your models with establishing themes?
Barry: Most of my models trust me enough to let me play. We discuss the general theme beforehand. I supply wardrobe, dress, gowns, MUA if needed, and props if needed. I love props. Then I work in post to get the image right. Copa: What does the future hold for Barry Freeman?
Barry: I am always looking for clients who understand that there is a difference between a photographer and an artist who uses photography to create art. My future artistic photography lies in finding those people who want that WoW! |
Copa: In your humble opinion, what makes your photos ‘stand out?’
Barry: My goal is to get that 1 shot that should be framed and placed in a prominent place of honor in your home. I want the image to impress family members so much that when you die your family members will argue over who gets the photo because it is a work of art. |
