Copa: At what time did you discover your sense of ‘style?’
Dana: I always wanted to be a star... so I tried to be stylish like my Mother Mary Bernadette Tolson(former chief of staff for council member Marion Barry) & her friends.

Dana: I (along with the rest of my cousins) have been a "ham" since I was a child.... always being asked to "perform" for and at family functions so acting seemed a no brainer... so I acted in school plays and did talent shows when I could. I also participated in tryouts for the Air Force Tops In Blue.... my cousin Kim Coles (of In Living Color & Living Single) is my inspiration; she is an actress, comedian, motivational speaker, she also used to model some too and she is a super happy/positive person.. I want to be like her... In May I was in my 1st stage play since I was in school and I'm about to start rehearsals this month or another one in October.

Copa: What other activities are you involved in?
Dana: Well, I'm currently a lifetime member & VP of Events for Ginger Baine Miller's organization, Women Veterans Interactive. We assist homeless and in transition Women Veterans at 'Their Point of Need.' I'm the Challenge America Military Operations Ambassador for the DMV area its a organization to help veterans find products, services & programs they need or want. They are like an information hub and they do run some of the programs. I'm a member of Social Hour with Pamela 'Spitfire' Wood-Garcia, an online live program (taped and put on youtube) where we take controversial posts and videos and talk about them... and I am an avid promoter of any business, service or activity I feel others should know about....and I'm looking at eventually writing a book. |
Copa: What are your views on beauty, style and looking great after 50?
Dana: Wow... 1st thank you for saying I look great... as a mom of two grown boys (Julian 25& Darrius 22) & surrogate host mother of fraternal twins (who just turned 18) I feel I don't look my age...but I'm not sure about the Great part....but my thoughts are for women of every age.... I think looking good starts inside... when you feel good you look good.... and when you look good you feel good... I wish I could say I am a gym rat.... but.... I'm not... I need to start going and I'm thinking of starting Zumba because I like to dance.... you need to get enough sleep, drink lots of water and eat sensibly. You need to dress the way that makes you feel good about yourself. Cause again when you feel good you look good...I love designer things just like the next girl but I mainly am a Gshop by Giovanna, clearance section of any store/boutique and Thrift Store girl.... I call myself a "Fashion Frugal" girl......and in make up... for everyday less is more... make up should enhance not overwhelm... but there are exceptions to that... photo shoots and shows require heavier make up so it reflects better on film or stage under the lights. |

A short story for you all. Dana lived one house apart from me as a child. We all knew she would one day be a run way model either in her 20s or in her 50s. She had a distinct avantage over most I must say she could walk in 6 inch heels in gravels if you can imagine that one. Boy from my house to her house she would switch them hips like it wasnt nothing from her house to mine and back across in 15 yards of gravel. Now have that contest ladies and im sure she would win hands down : )

I personally have met Dana on a women's wounded warrior retreat in Aspen, Co and we hit it off right away, she since has become a good friend of mine. She brings so much to the table (humor, class, wisdom, beauty, and so much more) when she walks through any door. I personally have met Dana on a women's wounded warrior retreat in Aspen, Co and we hit it off right away, she since has become a good friend of mine. She brings so much to the table (humor, class, wisdom, beauty, and so much more) when she walks through any door. I like that she expresses so much in this article about not only being sextand feeling good about ourselves as women, bit we should never let anything stop us from doing what we want on life. There are opportunities we just have to reach for them and looking as good at 50+ like she does, I have to ask, "Where do I sign up?" Dana is a true inspiration.

This is a great article that shows how amazing yet grounded Dana is. Dana was my supervisor for many years when we were both in the Air Force. This was a superb article. There aren't a lot of other magazines that focus on African American women after fifty. I truly enjoyed reading and funding out some interesting facts about being over fifty. I've got 8 more years until I will reach that milestone.
