Copa: Where did you grow up?
Jackie: I grew up in Sumter County in the state of South Carolina. It is also where I completed high school, Hillcrest High. Then I relocated to Washington, D.C.

Copa: When did you start learning more about the art and science of photography?
Jackie: I became encouraged more than 20 years ago by a gentleman, Brian Grant, who worked at a one-hour photo lab. He thought I had an "eye for photography." I paid attention to his advice.

Copa: What is the magical vision you see as you conduct your portrait sessions ?
Jackie: I look to see the inner and the outer beauty of each subject. Each personality is different. That difference makes each individual special in his or her setting.

Copa: How do your subjects enhance the expression of your final shots ?
Jackie: I encourage my subjects to relax. Additionally, they need to be natural. I love the work I do, and I want the subject on hand to enjoy each moment of focus.

Copa: What is your philosophy on light and color ? What is your view on the location of the setting ?
Jackie: The saturation of colors is key to the art of photography. Location enhances the setting, and it plays a vital role when bringing life to the image.

Copa: Do you remember your first photo session? If so, please describe the actual experience ?
Jackie: My first session was with my daughter, Nikki. It was an environmental session, and it was a wonderful experience. Children are our jewels. They bring a lot of happiness to our soul and to our environment.

Copa: What does the future hold for Jackie Hicks?
Jackie: Continuous growth. I look to encourage students about the art of photography. Likewise, I will continue to uplift mankind. I enjoy the opportunity to give back and inspire others, some of which include supporting our neighbors suffering from domestic violence, cancer, and homelessness. I have been very inspired by going to the Duke Ellington School for Performing Arts in the nation's capital. While there, I have given insight and advice to students who may become future photographers. Seeing the possibility in students reminds me of the wonderful world we have been so blessed to be a part of each day.
