Copa: Where are you from?
Melstar: I was born in the District of Columbia (DC) and raised in Montgomery County. Copa: Which schools have you attended?
Melstar: I graduated from Montgomery Blair High School and University of Maryland. I studied Social Science and minored in Biology. Afterwards I earned my certification in Cardiovascular Ultrasound Imaging. I completed my studies at a great time. It's all about timing, the year was 2011. Copa: At what time did you become interested in the field of Nursing?
Melstar: I was encouraged at a young age to be a Nurse by my Mom. She would tell me that there would always be a job for me in the Healthcare field. |
Copa: Which area in this occupation gathered your interests the most?
Melstar: In 2011 I decided to take a leap of faith and became self-employed with NICS LLC. It stands for Non Invasive Cardiovascular Services. I knew the demand for cardiovascular ultrasound imaging was great at the time. .

Copa: When did you decide to establish your own business and why?
Melstar: With the recent COVID- 19 crisis I would certainly say this was the most challenging. With many businesses being effected; mine at the time remained steady. There will always be a need for my services, especially during this time when we are seeing an increase in patients who develop systemic cardiovascular disorders that are associated with the COVID-19 virus. Making sure I was protected was key not only for me but for my patients and family.

Copa: Are their any other activities you like?
Melstar: I love to participate in social activities that allow me to connect with people who are in business themselves. But for a down side I like to sing Karaoke. It always puts a smile on my face. Copa: What does the future hold for Melanie in your life and the world of business?
Melstar: My future certainly holds continued growth and opportunity. I plan to brand myself in other states. It's important to give back to the community. I also plan to start a non-profit that targets heart wellness inner city youth. I remain encouraged and motivated with the opportunity to ensure that all are Heart Healthy, especially our youth. |
