The Joy of Traveling
By Lisa Spoden
“Travel and change of place impart new vigor to the mind.” — Roman philosopher and statesman Seneca
Travel enriches our lives in a multitude of ways. I say that with confidence as I reflect on over 35 years of my own rewarding travel experiences. There is nothing like going to a new place and immersing yourself in their food and culture. To put on “their shoes and walk around a little while” is what stretches our minds and gives us insight into how others see the world, why they react to things the way they do, and their customs.
One of the great joys of traveling is making emotional connections with people we meet. We have made so many friends - friends for the moment to share the experience - and lifelong friends. It is amazing how close you can feel to practical strangers when experiencing something like the Haleakala sunrise in Maui, Hawaii at 9,740 elevation or the total eclipse of the sun in Alliance, Nebraska, population 940. Then there are those kindred spirits whom you meet and travel with, that you stay in touch with through the internet and telephone to plan your next rendezvous. We like to inspire our customers to participate in “experiential” travel, travel that is not only fun but also includes cultural experiences. We encourage them to participate in the side trips on the cruises and to delve into the traditions of the local folk. These experiences will create lasting memories. I truly believe travel is one of the best ways we can enhance our understanding of the world in which we live.
In the upcoming issues we will explore different travel modes. You’ll travel along with Tareq, my husband, and I as we explore various areas of the world and we will discuss different types of vacations: whether it is a honeymoon, destination wedding, a family adventure, or single adventure. We’ll go to Europe, on river and ocean cruises. We’ll travel by plane, train, cruise ship and automobile.
Welcome to the wonderful world of travel and exploration of our beautiful planet. Perhaps we will better understand ourselves along the way.
