Beauty tips to Beat the Winter Blues
by Marta Bota
The holidays are behind us and we are in the midst of the cold dreary days of Winter. This time of year can get us all a little down as we are stuck indoors due to bad weather. A great way to beat the Winter blahs is to spend some extra time pampering yourself. With extra time on your hands being stuck indoors, it’s also a great time to get organized!
Part of my organizing takes place with my beauty routines. I assess my skin care products and may amp things up, as the winter months can be rough on skin. I sort of do an inventory of my cosmetic products as well, as I decide what to keep and what to purge. I give everything a thorough cleaning, especially my makeup brushes!
When it comes to winter skin care routines my rule of thumb is to continue to use a moisturizing sunscreen, as we still get sun exposure during these months, especially from the reflection on the snow! I also use a richer night time moisturizing cream, as skin can get very dry from the indoor heat and extreme temperature drops outdoors! Exfoliating is something I continue, but very gently, as the skin can be fragile and sensitive this time of year!
My makeup products get evaluated, as my skin is a lot paler this time of year. What I like to do is purchase two different foundations that I custom blend throughout the year. One is the exact shade of my skin when I am at my palest and one is the exact shade of my skin when I am at my most tan. I blend them throughout the year, as my skin goes through subtle changes, and I always have an exact match! My favorite foundation is Face Atelier Ultra Foundation Pro!
A light dusting of powder, or sometimes even going without, can work well as the skin is a bit drier than usual. I prefer a small amount of loose powder with a blending brush in areas that may need it during the day, usually in the “T Zone”. Smashbox Cosmetics Halo Hydrating Perfecting Powder is a finely milled loose powder that has a lovely soft and natural finish and comes in many shades! They work beautifully on older or drier skin so it doesn’t settle into the fine lines!
Adding a little color to my client’s face, with a warm blush tone can help brighten things up! One of my personal favorites is NARS Orgasm blush! It looks great on just about EVERY skin tone!

Lips can get very dry and chapped this time of year. I like to keep mine hydrated at all times, even when I am not wearing lipstick! My favorite is Embryolisse Rich Repairing Protective Stick Lip Balm. I also go with a more creamy lip color in the winter when I do wear lipstick. One of my favorites is Rimmel Moisture Renew Lipstick! They keep my lips nice and hydrated and have a great variety of shades!
Well, there you have it! Some great ideas to keep your skin and makeup looking as fresh as ever, even in the dead of Winter!
