Choosing the right Foundation for your Skin
When it comes to my craft as a makeup artist, one of the things that’s really important to me is to create the look of flawless skin. To achieve this effect, choosing the right foundation is critical. There are several variables involved when choosing a foundation. You must consider skin type and texture ( oily, dry, etc) and the undertones in your skin, so that you can find the right formulation and color match.
Foundation should look like it’s your skin, not makeup. To achieve this desired effect you should have a basic knowledge of what products are out there. There are many different formulations available and each has it’s role, depending on the type and texture of your skin.
Matte formula is one that’s oil free and gives really good coverage. They’re ideal for normal/oily skin and perfect to cover imperfections, such as breakouts or discoloration from sun damage. A lighter hand in the application is important, as it can look a bit mask-like because of it’s drier texture and finish. A matte foundation that I love is Makeup Forever Mat Velvet + Matifyng Foundation.

Dewy formulas work really well on dry skin because they add moisture and a dewy finish. This formula is great during the winter months, but in the summer they can look oily or not last as long. NARS Sheer glow is a fabulous dewy foundation!
Satin formula is in between a matte and dewy finish and can work on all skin types, except oily skin. It’s a lovely finish and is the most common one used, due to it’s versatility. My favorite is MAC Studio Finish satin Foundation.
Luminous formula works well on any skin type, as it reflects the light and helps diminish flaws on the surface of the skin. L’Oreal Lumi Magique is my top pick!
Now that you know what types of foundations are on the market, let’s talk about finding the perfect match! We all have different skin tones and the most important thing to consider when choosing a foundation color is to know your undertone. Undertone is the underlying tone of your skin. It can be warm, cool, or neutral. A good rule of thumb is to look at your inner wrist to check the color of your veins. If your veins are green your undertone is warm. If your veins are blue, your undertone is cool. If you have a combination of both, your undertone is neutral. Once you determine the undertone it is now time to find the perfect color match.
The best way to test a foundation is to apply several shades that are close to your own along the lower portion of your cheek and jawline. Whatever blends in invisibly is the best match! If you are choosing a shade in a department store it’s a good idea to step outside into the natural light. Natural light is the most true lighting, so you will get your exact match! Now that you know how to find the perfect match you are on the way to a flawless looking complexion!
