Will Survive Cancer was founded and inspired by my daughter-in-law who made me aware of the discrepancies of care and attention she received as opposed to many young women she met while in chemo. I was shocked at the stories I heard. I and some amazing people who met and feted Michelle while she was in DC to raise money for Komen Austin, got together to found WWSC. Michelle represented Komen Austin in 2009 as their spokesperson for the year because of her advocacy and the enormous amount of money she raised for Komen. My friends in DC urged me and others to begin our own charity – which was founded in August 2009.

So how did We Will Survive Cancer become involved with Kyle Haggerty and The Miss Globe United States Pageant?
We Will Survive Cancer was chosen as the national charity to be honored at this year’s Miss Globe United States at their September 23rd event. Since the Ballroom of the Hyatt Regency Dulles was secured, Kyle and Pamela suggested we turn it into a fundraising opportunity for We Will Survive Cancer. We had an automatic audience of girls, from 31 states, their family and friends and persons who support WWSC.
The evening began with Cocktails at 6:00 pm with attendees viewing
the Silent Auction. Dinner was served at 7:00 pm., with a beautiful presentation of fashions from “Lili The First,” of Georgetown, narrated by owner, Ifat Pridan occurring during dinner. The beautiful Models were Jana Sedlakova, Sher Mathew, Susan Young, Patricia Peple from Richmond VA, Josie Valdez (Josie’s Faces), Consuelo Perez, Tyeast Brown and Marie-Claude Svaldi.

Heather Louis Finch was Mistress of Ceremonies and introduced me to Welcome the Crowd – Others who spoke were Sher Mathew, WWSC Board member & WWSC Celebration of Life Honoree 2017. Sher’s words of triumph over her battle with cancer were gripping and inspiring. Sher never gave up Hope! Sher was followed by Stephanie Thomas, a cancer patient WWSC gifted at Christmas 2016. Greg Babcock, WWSC Board Member & Celebration of Life Honoree 2014 spoke on his battle with Cancer. Josie Valdez, WWSC Advisory Board Member talked about WWSC’s “Sisterhood of the Traveling Wig Program and the video produced this summer documenting the presentation of a wig and make over to Kriscia Valladeres.
Pageantry is a blessing to many young women who would otherwise not have great opportunities. In many instances pageantry has taken the place of Cotillion. The girls work with a coach who assists them in discovering and enhancing the way they present themselves to the world. The following is information I have discovered about pageantry and its benefits to young women.
- The girls participating in pageants must have a platform that gives back to a charity.
- The girls must do good work and be more than a pretty face.
- The concept of being a pageant girl Teaches and increases their poise, grace, self-worth, confidence and how they relate to the world.
- Not all young ladies come from homes that boost that sense of self-worth.
- Many of the girls have experienced bullying in their lives and enrolling in a pageant, having a coach to work with them provides self-confidence, in the way they present themselves and relate to society. Pageantry offers an amazing opportunity for them to overcome their fears and intimidation.
- Choosing a platform of service gives the girls insight into being good citizens and teaches them to give back to others.
- Opportunities for school and career increase because of their experiences in pageantry.
