Where are you from?
I'm from the DC area originally, my mom still lives in the same house in Darnestown, Maryland where I grew up! It's kind of surreal to now bring my own son and see him running around the same yard where I used to play. Copa: Which schools have you attended? Kristina: I was privileged to have a private education at some of the area's finest schools including Butler Montessori, Sandy Spring Friends, and Holton Arms. For my undergraduate degree I attended the College of William & Mary. Copa: At what time did you become interested in Business and Marketing?
Kristina: Well, I've been in sales and marketing for nearly 20 years, but for the hospitality industry. Even now I represent a luxury resort in Miami, and I work with associations that want to hold their meetings there. But just a few years ago - right before the pandemic a lightbulb went off, and I was like, "What if I did sales and marketing for the fashion industry?" |
Copa: When did the 'fashion bug' bite you and at what time did you develop your blog?
Kristina: I like to say I've always been interested in fashion, but I honestly grew up as king of an ugly duckling - just a smidge overweight, not an ounce of fashion sense, no concept of how to apply makeup - I had to develop those skills later on in life. When I *really* started exploring fashion was about 6 or 7 years ago. I was inspired by my Director of Sales at the time, Azza Bell. Knowing that she was fashion-forward, I figured I had to "up my game" if I was going to make an impact. Gradually I developed confidence in my own style and the courage to simply "play." About a year ago I started my blog with encouragement from Roxy Young (aka @loxy_styles) and that is something that I write about extensively - how I had to carve my own niche, my own way, into this mysterious world of "fashion."

Copa: What other areas do you cover in your writing?
Kristina: I have a wide range of interests including theater, art, music, and literature in addition to fashion and beauty. I write when I feel inspired by something that I've seen, heard, or read. I also like to draw connections between different art forms, or to bring current trends into an historical context.

Copa: Would you like to share your opinion of the status of style presently with our readers?
Kristina: The wonderful thing about fashion right now is that there are no limits, no right or wrong, and the sky is the limit! I'm truly intrigued by the growing evolution of street style, although in my opinion "athleisure" is about tapped out. Personally, I adore more classic styles that draw from the late 1950's cocktail attire, with the cinched waist and bell-curve silhouette, originally inspired by Dior's "New Look" of 1947. I'm also inspired by Chanel, the house as well as the woman, who is just so incredibly fascinating. Both houses, under the current leadership of female creative directors, continue to lead their respective brands forward while respecting the legacy that they have each inherited. Anything that empowers women to be themselves, whatever that is in any given moment, is what's important to me in fashion. Of course, I have to mention Troy Anthony, an emerging designer whose mission is to help women find wardrobe solutions and to help empower them in their style choices, so that they can go out and exude that confidence in their lives.

Copa: How would you describe your personal style?
Kristina: Authentic. At this point we are getting tired of the too-good-to-be-true images on Instagram, I like to keep it real. You have to have a balance though, because Instagram, fashion shows, and media in general are about producing art, which doesn't have to always be realistic. There's definitely fantasy involved, which is why I named my blog "Fashion Fantasy." We are all aspiring to something, and I think that's OK as long as we remain confident in who we are and what we've already achieved.

Copa: What does the future hold for Kristina Christopher in her wonderful world of fashion & style?
Kristina: Right now, I'm setting up my own PR and Marketing business, to support other creatives and grow the fashion industry here in the DMV. I'm starting small, with the designer Troy Anthony as my first client, but I look forward to growing the business gradually. I'm also excited to be working with you, Rodney, on a monthly column for CopaStyle Magazine!
