~2019 Spectrum Circle Awards Luncheon~
Rodney Wayne Branche
Copa Style Magazine Editor-in-Chief/CEO
Copa: How do you feel about your 4th Spectrum Circle Awards Luncheon?
Karen: I am so excited about the 4th Annual Spectrum Circle Awards it is hard to believe this is our fourth year and the awardees this year are all exceptional women who are leaders in their respective fields. We are honored to award these women who are showcasing daily with their work innovation and leadership by example.
The Spectrum Circle was created to be a safe space for women to share their authentic journeys and use their stories to create gender equality within the workplace, said Karen Maria Alston, Spectrum Founder and CEO. Annually, at the Spectrum Circle Awards we honor a few exceptional women who use their talents to lead through innovation in their respective fields.”
The annual growth is a key indicator of the need to showcase the women who are impactful in our communities and businesses around the country.
Copa: Everything looked great with your wonderful preparation. Who designed your dress for this year and what was the inspiration?
Karen: This year my dress was designed by Vivian Agbokaba owner of Anya by Vivien. We wanted a bright color that would emphasize spring but also add a touch of drama with a unique cold shoulder and sleeve.

Copa: In your personal opinion, what is the important significance of the Spectrum Circle Awards and the recipients?
Karen: Founded in 2015, The Spectrum Circle is a community of female makers, researchers, educators, creatives, executives, leaders, innovators, drivers and influencers in business or industry who share their collective career and personal experiences to help women achieve gender parity with men in their careers and expand the lens of what is possible. The Spectrum Circle uses unique experiences and events, trainings and workforce development to expose women to a variety of stories and diverse learned experiences from leaders in numerous industries and backgrounds.
This year our awardees are diverse leaders in their respective fields. Many trailblazing in areas with limited amounts of women of color. The awards are needed in order to shine a spotlight on the many women who are attempting to break the glass ceiling or create new ventures to showcase their skills and talent. The Spectrum Circle will always be a platform to showcase these women who are the unsung heroes of our time.
As Michelle Rice stated in her acceptance speech it is so important as women to showcase who we are to the world and to celebrate each other and our accomplishments.

Copa: What does the future hold for the future of the Karen Maria Alston and the Spectrum Awards?
Karen: This week I have been repeating the same quote to friends who are asking me how I am processing the success of The Spectrum Circle Awards. My answer is simple, “what used to be a wish is now normal, what is normal is shifting and I have learned to trust the process.”
Growing, The Spectrum Circle has forced me to move far outside of my comfort zone. I have embraced the change and the doors of opportunity that have opened for me. I am so excited about the future and what lies ahead for me and the business.
