Copa: At what time did you develop an interest in the field of Psychology?
Dr. Sarah: At 16, actually 14, I was a Summer Camp Counselor, people young and old would come to me with their problems believing I wouldn't judge them or tell their secrets to others. Additionally, my friend in 11th grade said she was going to be a Psychologist. At that time I decided to become one as well. I kept the pact since later in college she decided to to follow her boyfriend as a Chemist or Computer Science Major. I stuck with becoming a Psychotherapist. |
Copa: Have you always taken a leadership role early in your life?
Dr. Sarah: Yes, As a little girl, I found myself being the head of groups, particularly in roles regarding service and humanitarianism. However, I started to shy away from leadership roles as I became a young adult. If you are a leader, you are a leader. I still, to date serve as a leader whether in my business or when taking on opportunities to serve in my community.

Copa: When did you establish your practice, and what area of your field do you focus?
Dr. Sarah: I established my first business as a Clinical Practitioner in 2008. I started in my basement/in-law suite of my 4 bedroom home I purchased in December 2008. The reason being, I was tired of getting fired or laid off all the time and too it as a sign from God that it was time to work for myself as an Entrepreneur. I mentioned earlier that I shied away from leadership roles. I believe entrepreneurship is a calling, and when it's time to answer your calling it's time to do so. Everything unfolds for you. At that time, I focused on mood improvement, marriage, and family work.

Copa: Please share with our readers the importance of the counseling of a good coach would be in their lives.
Dr. Sarah: So we have to clarify there is a difference between a coach and a counselor. A counselor is clinically trained with a specialty and governed by laws of the state he or she practices in, whereby her or she abides by ethical codes and standards. A counselor focuses on your past, any trauma that resulted , and provides clinical advice and/or direction on overcoming trauma. A coach can be certified, and not specifically governed by laws or standards in the field. A coach focuses on ones goals in the present. A coach cannot counsel someone, but a counselor could coach someone due to their training and licensure. But within their scope of practice. A counselor cannot practice outside their scope of knowledge, but standard and law. With this in mind, the importance of having a good coach in their lives can be essential. The coach can hold you accountable to starting and completing your goals. A coach can help you create challenging, meaningful, tangible goals that lead to your success and happiness. A coach can help you identify the barriers impeding your goals, and create a roadmap or plan of action for your success. A coach can provide stucture and guidelines to help supplement your learning, knowledge, and growth. Depending upon what you are looking to accomplish determines the type of coach to seek. We all nee someone to empower us. believe in us, and push us along to our greatness. It's important to have that type of guidance, leadership, and mentorship to help one achieve their goals. If you seek a coach to help you overcome trauma in your life, it's best to seek a counselor instead. A counselor is trained to help you address, identify, assess, test, diagnose, and treat symptoms, trauma, and past problems. Know what you want and then proceed on getting the best support and service possible. |
Copa: We see you have a publication entitled “Speak Your Voice,” tell us a little about the the book.
Dr. Sarah: This is amazing book is about helping one speak true to their power and finding their voice again. Not only is is a story of my life's journey starting with the sexual assault that happened right before I left for college at 18 and how that played part with muting my own voice, my power, and how I had overcome the trauma. Other courageous shared their stories as well about speaking their voices. Unumuting their voices to be heard and how they took their power right back. This is a definite must-read if you've been someone who had suffered in silence for far too long due to traumatic events that happened in your life. It's time to speak your voice and free yourself by pressing past pain and getting on to your purpose, power, profits, and profits. It's important to share your story one day of being an overcomer. I always tell my clients there are people waiting on your message and story and they're willing to pay for your story. It's time to speak your voice because simply, your voice matter. You matter.

Copa: What good advice would you give others on how to navigate their lives during the present CORVID-19 pandemic?
Dr. Sarah: 3 points:
Dr. Sarah: 3 points:
- 1st point: Control. Do not look at what you cannot control, but look at what you are controlling right now. At times, we meditate and belabor the problems we face, reliving and re-traumatizing ourselves day in and day out, Incapable of breaking this cycle. We overstate reality and think that is our truth. However, we must throw into our lives something called a pattern interrupt, where we stop the autopilot and drift along in life, and actually face the challenges in order to overcome them and successfully live a better life that we desire and deserve. Therefore, let's start by looking at what you do and can control and build your momentum and drive to feeling good about that so that now your focus will seek after more instances of what you are controlling, over even empower yourself to control matters that you can control and not worry about the ones you cannot. I sympathize with those who have lost loved ones during the pandemic, I lost 6 people. however, praise god, we are still here and living. What will you do with your life right now.
- 2nd point: Connection. We thrive by being connected to others. While the pandemic seemingly separated us, I didn't understand how the pandemic took away our connectedness when we have, interestingly, already been 'disconnected' by way of social media! There is less interaction in person than there is to meeting on social media. I get it, we lost control to decide or have the option to meet in person or meet online and now we at the time could only meet online. The reason for the strain and difficulty many faced is because we are created to be relational. Therefore, if anything, take advantage of being communal. take advantage of human touch and reconnecting again. As the world begins to open up to publicly meet with minimal restrictions, take the time to meet, responsibly, still following social distancing guidelines as it applies, and engage with others a little bit more than before. We never know what we've had until it is gone. so appreciate this moment that been given to us again to connect.
- 3rd point: Contribution. What service or support can you give to others? We also are created with a sense of purpose. and while you may or may not fully know your purpose, you can do what I advise my clients who seek after purpose and meaning for their lives, to free associate. Take a few minutes before starting your day, to have quiet time for and with yourself. Take a few minutes to connect with yourself and listen to your inner self in what you want to do today, who you want to see today, how you want to show up in this world today. Write these thoughts of inspiration down and simply do them. At times it may be to call your 90-year-old Auntie in Texas, or to take the mail to your elderly neighbor next door, or say a kind word to your nemesis, or.....whatever that came up for you, it came up for a reason. and typically, when we contribute our efforts, albeit great or small, it feels amazing to have contributed because that is simply how we are built. To offer value to the world. It isn't always based on financial gain, it could simply be to make you feel better about yourself that you have done something for someone other than for yourself without seeking anything in return. Contribute today.

Copa: What does the future hold for Dr. Sarah Langley?
Dr. Sarah: My brand is all about being limitless. So there are no limits in my future. You know, we are our own clients, and I took time off to work on myself, honor, and extend the courtesy to my feelings and thoughts by doing self-care strategies. My greatest achievement wasn't just running 2 successful businesses and having a clinical practice up and down the east coast, but it was being a caregiver to my Mother, Mary Nelson Langley for 12 years, who had advanced Alzheimer's disease. My mother transitioned in 2019, and typically during the anniversary of her transition, I give myself the grace and courtesy to mourn, grieve, sit still, be quiet, cry, and celebrate my mom and celebrate myself for being alive and living my purpose.
With that said, I'm gearing up for my VIP one on one services, as well as my newest book that will be out soon, to also creating a leadership academy for young women leaders to help them expand their enterprises, equity and have equality as an entrepreneurs.
