Copa: Where are you from?
Hanna: I am from Bowie, Maryland. I have lived here my entire life and I absolutely love it. From the amazing friends I have made to the environment, Bowie is honestly a very unique place filled with lively people. However, I wouldn't mind moving. I love switching things up and experiencing the different opportunities that come with a new location.

Copa: Where do you plan on attending college when you graduate from High School?
Hanna: I would love to attend the Savannah College of Art and Design or SCAD after my senior year, preferably their Atlanta campus. In March, I had the opportunity to visit their Atlanta campus, and I fell in love with it. From the beautifully designed interior to their diverse selection of courses, SCAD quickly became my dream school. I desire to receive a degree in Fashion and SCAD is ranked number one fashion business program by The Business of Fashion globally. Therefore, I would absolutely love to attend SCAD after my senior year.

Copa: At what time did the 'fashion bug' bite you?
Hanna: I have always interested in fashion and modeling, but the "fashion bug" truly bit me when i was about seven years old at an art museum. I joined my close friend and her art class on a field trip to an art museum in Baltimore. As I was exiting my friends car, there was a middle aged lady standing outside the museum and she glared at me. She then proceeded to ask rather loudly, "Are you a model?" At that point in my life, I had not thought much of becoming a model because i was too short and did not look like a model. I shyly answered her and said, "No." She then asked me, "Do you want to model?" and I responded with, "Uhh no not really." However, I took an interest in modeling, but I didn't tell anyone, because I thought they would laugh at me and say I couldn't. With a surprised look, she asked me, "What do you want to be when your older?" I replied with, "A farmer" because my other friend wanted to be one, so I wanted to be one. After that encounter, modeling became an option for me and the fashion bug truly bit me. Since then, I was encouraged by friends, family, and strangers to take up modeling.

.Copa: When did you decide to become a fashion model?
Hanna: I decided to become a model in late 2017. I got signed by Linda Townsend Management, but I was told she didn't do much model work. Her talent agency excels in the acting industry, however, acting is not what I am particularly drawn to doing. Therefore, I decided to take my career into my own hands. I officially started my modeling career December 2017, when I created an account on Model Mayhem, an online network where models and photographers can connect and collaborate. I didn't expect to gain much attention or even have a true career in the modeling industry. To my surprise, in about a week, I had my first request to do a photo-shoot with two local photographers in Bowie. Since then, I have had over 20 photoshoots and attended my first Model Call last Sunday. |
Copa: Who are your favorite 3 models?
Hanna: My three favorite models are Tyra Banks, Zendaya, and Kendall Jenner. Tyra Banks is a role model to me in the modeling industry and my number one favorite model. I admire her passion for the industry and her overall impact on it. From being rejected from agencies for being "too ethnic" and having to deal with discrimination, I commend her drive to succeed and not allow other people to tell her she can't. Not only did she become the first African American woman to grace the cover of Sports Illustrated and the Victoria's Secret catalog, but a world renowned model. I aspire to be as driven and successful as her one day in the modeling industry and impact and inspire others like she has. Another model I love is Zendaya. Being a bi-racial woman, I am happy to have another multicultural woman to look up to in this industry, because there are not that many biracial people in it. I admire the fact that she is an activist and is not afraid to stand up for what she believes in. Lastly, I admire Kendall Jenner, because she is just an astounding model and all her work is flawless. |
Copa: What was the experience like at your first photo shoot?
Hanna: My first photo shoot was amazing and hectic. Two days before my shoot, I decided that I was going to use Nair to remove all my hair, because shaving took too long. However, I didn't realize that my skin was sensitive to Nair, resulting in red bumps all over my body, including my face. I was completely mortified and was in tears. The next day, I did everything in my power to somehow make these bumps vanish. Unfortunately, I was not as successful as I hoped I would be. I am crying my eyes out and call my photographer to tell him that I am unable to shoot tomorrow, because of my situation. We agree to see how I am tomorrow, and if I truly was not looking better, we would reschedule. I woke up the next morning nervous that I wouldn't be better. Thankfully, I was slightly better and was able to conceal all the small red bumps. So, my mother, father, and I drive to the location and I have my first photo-shoot! It was quite fun and was able to have another model mentor me throughout the shoot. So, although the events leading up to the shoot were hectic, my first photo-shoot was amazing and the results were beautiful!

Copa: Have you attended any modeling schools?
Hanna: No, I have not attended any modeling schools, however, I would love to some day. I learned everything I know from endless days of watching YouTube videos and looking at magazines such as Vogue and Vanity Fair.

Copa: How would you describe your individual 'style?'
Hanna: My individual style depends on how I feel. Some days I would rock a simple white tee with joggers, other days, I go for a more relaxed urban look. Personally, my staple wardrobe pieces are a crisp blank white t-shirt, fitting skinny jeans, and sneakers. I like the more chill and relaxed look, because I can dress it up, if needed. I am all about comfort and convenience when it comes to my wardrobe.

Copa: What is your opinion of the present fashion scene in the DMV?
Hanna: Personally, I love DMV fashion. I adore the vibrant and work of Afua Sam, which I had the pleasure of seeing at the Georgetown Fashion Show. Her story and work is amazing, and as someone who is interested in getting a degree in fashion, her work is inspiring. I believe that DMV fashion is influenced by the various cultures of each designer and the environment of which they live in.

Copa: What does the future hold for Hanna Jordan Kent?
Hanna: Well, I hope to join a modeling agency soon, so I can further my modeling career. I plan to finish my senior year and graduate in May 2019. Following that, I hope to go to college and get a degree in Fashion at SCAD. With a successful career in modeling, I hope to someday be able to give back to the DMV by hosting free/low priced modeling camps for young girls who are interested in the industry. I always want to give back to people, because they have shaped me to be the person that I am today. Mainly, I want to have an impact on people and help them pursue their dreams. However, at the end of it all, it is God's will and not my own. If He wants me to pursue modeling, then He will open the doors for me to walk through. If He has other plans for me, then I will gladly go with what His will is for me. No matter what I do, I plan to glorify God and help change peoples lives.
