Gayela Bynum reports on the David Yurman Fashion Show
Copa: How do you feel about the upcoming exciting David Yurman Fashion Show Fundraiser at MacLaren Showroom on November 12th?
Gayela: Rodney, thank you for asking! I am so excited about the upcoming David Yurman Fashion show (www.davidyurman,com). The show has been in discussion since April, finding a date with David Yurman’s Corporate, Security, Public Affairs offices as well as We Will Survive Cancer and McLaren requires coordination. November 12th is the date and I have to say the show will be magical. Josie Valdez and her Valdez Management team is producing the event -- from organizing the fabulous videos, photo shoots, model call and working the details of the actual show, it has been an effort of love while focusing on the details to make the show epic.

Copa: We understand that the proceeds will help to fund the "Making Spirits Bright campaign. Please tell us all about the program volunteers may help.
Gayela: “Making Spirits Bright,” is a major project of We Will Survive Cancer. For 13 years we have been gifting children diagnosed with cancer and adult cancer patients and their families. Macy’s has sponsored and is a proud partner in WWSC’s effort since 2018. “Making Spirits Bright,” has benefitted thousands of cancer patients and their families these past 13 years. For many years, WWSC has supported children with cancer, this year is no exception with a young (3-year-old) child.

Copa: Dr. Renee Allen will be receiving the "Don't Waste May Cancer" award, How did this honor begin and how many people have received this distinguished award over the years? Also, how is this different from the "Celebration of Life" honor?
Gayela: “Don’t Waste My Cancer,” was a quote coined by my daughter-in-law, Michelle Tull Bynum. Michelle, after being diagnosed with advanced Stage III cancer in 2005, threw herself into raising money and awareness that breast cancer occurs in women regardless of age. She was told by her doctor that she was too young to have cancer – by the time she was diagnosed she was facing the fight of her life with Stage III cancer. Michelle could have gone to bed and pulled the covers over her head, instead she, her family and friends raised over $125,000 for Komen in Austin TX. Michelle was interviewed all over Texas, was the spokesperson for Komen in 2009 because “she did not waste her cancer!” The “Don’t Waste My Cancer,” award has only been given once before – the recipient being Suzette Manduley. The Board of WWSC determined that the “Don’t Waste My Cancer,” award should be given to someone who goes over and above their cancer diagnosis, to give back to the community. Suzette is the epitome of one who has not wasted her cancer; Suzette calls herself a “prevailer.” She constantly volunteers in the community (in her off time) with multiple organizations and never complains while dealing with treatments both invasive and surface that she has faced since she was a young girl. Suzette is a true inspiration to persons fighting cancer. Renee’ Allen embodies the definition of one who has not wasted her cancer and was chosen by the Board to receive the second “Don’t Waste My Cancer award. Renee’ serves on the Board of We Will Survive Cancer, she is a TV & Radio personality and is also known as The People’s Emcee in the DMV. Renee’ uses her platform to connect likeminded people. She is dedicated to the betterment of humanity and is an advocate for human decency. Renee’ was diagnosed almost a year ago with cancer. She has silently been fighting cancer while never skipping a beat to be of service to the community. Dr. Allen is a SHERO to women all over the DMV – and was a natural choice for the “Don’t Waste My Cancer,” award. |
Copa: How can volunteers reach you this year to assist with the gift wrapping for the kids for Christmas?
Gayela: We Will Survive Cancer is receiving requests for gifts this Christmas, from the organizations we work with such as Howard University Cancer Center, Life With Cancer, Virginia Oncology, St. Agnes, and other centers that assist cancer patients. These families are financially challenged and would otherwise not enjoy the spirit of the season. Donations of new clothes, toys, household items and supplies will be accepted by contacting me by email [email protected] text or phone 202-257-7930. Please be sure to leave a voice mail if there is no answer.
