Copa: Where are you from?
Christie: I was born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas but lived in Oklahoma, Austin, Connecticut and New York City at various times through my life. Copa: At what time did begin working with We Will Survive Cancer in your present position?
Christie: I started supporting "Making Spirits Bright" in 2016 when we sponsored three families in The Austin Texas area and joined the board shortly after. |
Copa: How did you develop your special skills working with people?
Christie: I’ve always had a passion for helping people, particularly children. From a young age I worked in child care where many were under the care of Child Protective Services. Being a part of their lives in these developmental years made me realize the impact I could make through the simple act of just caring.

Copa: Please share some of your background with our readers.
Christie: My theatrical background often parlayed into opportunities to give back through performances supporting charitable organizations like The Hole in the Wall Gang camp, Blue Santa, and St. Baldrick’s Foundation with 27 years with Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts, I’ve had the opportunity to volunteer with many worthy causes ranging from Seton Shivers Cancer Foundation, Caritas, Meals on Wheels and Austin Pets Alive.

Copa: When did you first meet Gayela Bynum, Chair of WWSC?
Christie: I met Gayela in 1990 when I was dating her son Brad. We hit it off immediately and while Brad and I had to end our relationship due to distance (he was in college in Texas, and I was an Au Pair in Connecticut). Gayela and I remained pen-pals for a brief time. I always remembered her with such love, respect and fondness. Fast forward, over 20 years life circumstances brought us back together. Brad anI reconnected after both experiencing great loss in our lives and in December of 2019 we were married. I am blessed to now call Gayela "Mom." |
Copa: What will you be ushering into the organization this year with your special flair?
Christie: I would like to place focus on expanding our reach to more families in Texas. As you know, Brad's wife Michelle was the inspiration for We Will Survive Cancer, and her journey began here in the Austin area. It only seems right that we would carry on her legacy here where her son Reid can stay evolved and witness first-hand how his mother's words, "Don't Waste My Cancer," continued to be honored.

Copa: We understand WWSC needs much more support, how can people help now?
Christie: I would encourage people to think back on a time where cancer touched their lives one way or another, whether it be a personal diagnosis, a family member, friend or co-worker, we all know someone that has been affected and we have all seen the physical, emotional, and financial stress can bring. The need for support goes far beyond treatment and a cure, so, please don't dismiss the value of contributing by thinking it won't make a difference. Every little bit helps.

Copa: What does the future hold for Christie and the wonderful world of We Will Survive Cancer?
Christie: I have learned that the future is not something I can dictate because it is not in my hands. I have found peace in letting life unfold as it is meant to be and finding the lessons and the blessings along the way. As for We Will Survive Cancer, I see our mission continuing to bring hope and comfort to those in need. If that inspires even one person to donate, then our future looks that much brighter.
