Kiyah House

Marcia Holmes is the CEO and Founder of KIYAH HOUSE, an organization dedicated to ensuring individuals with disabilities have access to the therapeutic programs, resources, and support they need to thrive. Driven by both personal experience and a deep passion for advocacy, Marcia founded KIYAH HOUSE in honor of her daughter, Kiyah, a resilient young adult living with special needs, including intellectual disabilities.
As a devoted mother and champion for inclusive support systems, Marcia has made it her mission to bridge the gap between diagnosis and access to meaningful, life-enhancing services. Under her leadership, KIYAH HOUSE is committed to empowering families, uplifting communities, and creating a world where every person with a disability is seen, valued, and supported. With a strong foundation in advocacy, compassion, and lived experience, Marcia Holmes remains a powerful voice for change in the disability community.

1. Where are you from? Born in Washington, DC and moved to Prince George's County, Md at a young age.
2. What schools have you attended? St. Margaret's Catholic School K-8, Central High School, PG Community College, Bowie State University (Undergraduate and Graduate)
3. At what time did you establish Kiyah House, and how long did it take? KIYAH HOUSE was established on May 2, 2024. The process was quick and focused—completed in about three weeks.
4. Since you have established Kiyah House, how has your organization helped other families work with others with disabilities? Since establishing KIYAH HOUSE, we've helped families by providing access to therapeutic programs, resources, and advocacy support. We've created a safe space where individuals with disabilities and their caregivers feel seen, supported, and empowered to thrive together.
5. What does the future hold for the activities of your organization, and how can others help?
The future of KIYAH HOUSE is limitless with the support of sponsors and donors. We’re committed to expanding our programs, offering more inclusive therapeutic services, and creating community events that uplift individuals with disabilities and their families. Our most immediate goal is to establish a therapeutic horse riding program—something incredibly meaningful to me, as it played a critical role in Kiyah’s ability to learn to walk.
Due to Kiyah's cerebral palsy diagnosis—onset at birth, though I wasn’t aware of her special needs until she was about six months old—this mission is deeply personal. It was then that her pediatrician first suspected a developmental delay, which ultimately led to her CP diagnosis. Doctors were unsure if she would ever walk or talk. So I know firsthand how vital early intervention and therapeutic access are to the well-being of individuals with disabilities.
At KIYAH HOUSE, we also understand that behind every person with a disability is a caregiver holding everything together. Without that strong, supportive foundation in human form—the caretaker—the individual with the disability cannot truly thrive. It’s the same principle airlines use in emergencies: put on your own oxygen mask first so you can help others. That’s why we’re committed to supporting caregivers with respite care, tap-out opportunities, and emotional and physical wellness resources—ensuring they are recharged, equipped, and empowered to continue their essential role.
You can support our work by volunteering, donating, or sponsoring a person with special needs. Visit kiyahhouse.org to learn more and contribute to our mission.
